In 2011, the Escola de Hotelaria e Tourismo Cabo Verde (EHTCV) was founded in the capital Praia on the island of Santiago. To date, it is the only hotel management school in Cape Verde. The hotel school offers apprenticeships in the hotel, catering and tourism sectors, including hotel management, restaurant & service, chefs and guides. Since 2018, a small subsidiary of the school has been established for short courses and workshops on the island of Sal.
However, the monthly tuition fee for training that must be charged to operate the school is prohibitive for many families. Even the flight from another island to Santiago or Sal is already an insurmountable hurdle for some families, so sending their children to the vocational school from other islands is out of the question.
Thus, most of the young people do not have a professional education and work in the hotels without the appropriate qualifications. Therefore, in the majority of cases, higher positions are filled by qualified foreign workers.
In order to give the native residents better job opportunities, we have selected students based on questionnaires and personal interviews, who will be provided with all educational costs for graduation from EHTCV.
Since the start of the project in 2018, six scholarship holders have already successfully completed the training.
Cape Verde is an African island nation of nine inhabited islands with a population of approximately 550,000. It is one of the most stable countries in Africa. A major contribution to the country's progress is made by the tourism industry, which is the country's largest economic sector. The majority of the population works in tourism. Praia, on the island of Santiago, is the capital and economic centre. Most tourists travel to the islands of Sal and Boa Vista, which are known for their dream beaches.

The EHTCV is the only hotel management school in Cape Verde, with headquarters in Praia, Santiago, and a small branch in Santa Maria, Sal. It was established to give locals the chance to receive professional training in tourism, the islands' most important industry, in order to obtain skilled jobs or even start their own business.
